But its underlying profit nearly tripled, thanks to a strong showing at its Canadian Husky Energy Inc. (HSE.TO) unit and improved third-generation (3G) network business.
The company posted a net profit of HK$10.69 billion ($1.37 billion) for the first six months of 2008, beating an average forecast of HK$8.47 billion by four analysts polled by Reuters.
That compares with a net profit of HK$28.8 billion in the same period last year when it booked a HK$35 billion gain from the sale of its Indian mobile phone network to Vodafone Group Plc (NYSE:VOD).
Hutchison recorded underlying profit of HK$27.4 billion as it trimmed 3G losses by 72 percent to HK$3.18 billion during the period and against a profit of HK$9.5 billion after stripping out profits on property revaluation and disposal of investments and others.
